Socorro County located in the Central New Mexico. It is the second-largest county in the State. The City of Socorro is a county seat with population about 8,200. Socorro is located 74 miles South of Albuquerque in Rio Grande Valley at an elevation of 4,579 feet.

      The major employers in Socorro include the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology; The Bureau of Land Management (BLM); Socorro General Hospital; The National Radio Astronomy Observatory; government offices, schools, mining, retail businesses, hotels, restaurants, etc.

    Low humidity and high elevation provide a pleasant year-round climate. Summers are hot as everywhere with average high temperatures in mid 90's with cooling at night to mid and high 70's . Winters are mild with high average temperature in the 40's-mid 50's and low 20's-30's. There is no much snow in winter, just few inches during the coldest days.

    Socorro County offers a lot of outdoor activities, such as hiking, camping, hunting, bird watching, nature photography, horseback-riding, fishing, boating, golf, etc. Points of interest include Cibola National Forest; Bosque del Apache and Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuges; San Miguel Mission, Rio Grande River; Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument. Wildlife includes deer, coyote, elk, pronghorn antelope, bighorn sheep, black bear, mountain lion, wild turkey, Mexican spotted owl, quail and a lot of migratory birds which you can see in the Bosque del Apache. Migratory birds include sandhill cranes, whooping cranes, snow geese, ducks. More than 350 different bird species were observed here since 1960's.
